SEAFEST – COMES TO LIFE!
THE 2010 COMMERCIAL AND RESIDENCIAL SEAFEST DECORATING CONTEST!
As Seafest fast approaches, the Seafest Committee would like to invite commercial
businesses and residents of Yarmouth County, to
participate in the 2010 Seafest Decorating Contest. Homes and businesses are encouraged to compete by adding as much flare
to their lawns, windows, roof tops, gardens, etc, to all things Seafest and how life is celebrated by the sea. 2009 residential
3rd place winner, Kristina Cryderman says she is prepared to win first place this summer! Making Memories, Bridal
and Tuxedo, the 1st place commercial winners, plan to participate once again, and will be submitting a float in
the Grand Street Parade on Saturday, July 17, in hopes to regain the title of “Best Decorated Pulling Vehicle”.
As the competition heats up contestants are also encouraged to incorporate the Seafest theme “Carnival by the Sea”.
Plug those Christmas lights back in and bring your display to life with the help of some juggling lobsters, dancing mermaids,
or driftwood creatures. Cast off with your creativity and
let’s make Yarmouth County the place to celebrate life by the sea!
All entries are to be finished by July 7th, as judging will take place on Thursday July 8th,
and Friday July 9th. All ribbons and prizes will be awarded on Tuesday July 13th. There will be separate
judging categories for both residential and commercial displays.
To register for this event please contact the Seafest display located in the Visitor Information Centre, at 902-881-3181
or e-mail, yarmouthseafest@gmail.com. This is a positive way to involve members of the community and will bring Yarmouth
to life, in true Seafest spirit!
GROWING SEAFEST – A SEAFEST LEGACY
Majorettes that once marched in Seafest parades now march as Seafest volunteers.
Seafest attendants have gone on
to be Seafest queens, and Seafest Queens have gone on to represent the nation. Like Seafest participants, the community based
volunteer festival has made a name for itself over the past 32 years. Take for instance, Maria Fahey of Mavillette - Miss
Friendship 2004. Maria was an active member of the royal party and a member of the winning women’s Dory Rowing team
that summer and hasn’t looked back! As a college student Maria signed on as a Seafest staff member. She worked hard
in planning and organizing Seafest events, but one stands out in particular, “The Grand Banks Mackerel
Toss”. The event was a huge success! The dedication that Maria put forth, built a solid base for
the event. With this, the mackerel toss returns again this year on a much larger scale as the “Scotia Garden Mackerel
Toss”. In this, the second year of the mackerel toss, Maria is back after working in the community, and returns as a
dedicated volunteer. Due to the great success of the event last summer, with large crowds and high levels of participation,
the Seafest Committee sees it fit to relocate the Scotia Garden Mackerel Toss from its initial location in Alma Square to
the Yarmouth Waterfront. 2009 winners, of CBDC Angela Carver and Chester Poole, are prepared to defend their winning title
two years in a row! On Tuesday, July 20th Maria will be ready to work her magic and make fish fly at the Scotia
Garden Mackerel Toss! Yarmouth and the Seafest Festival takes pride in the community in building this base of volunteers,
having encouraged, the youth of the community to participate actively in events, thus leaving a legacy in the past, present
and future.
SEAFEST
GRAND STREET PARADE MARSHAL NOMINATIONS
Seafest is fast
approaching and the Seafest Committee would like to encourage nominations to be made for local Yarmouth residents to lead
the 2010 Parade! Nominations are generally made on behalf of someone who is known by many
people or groups to have made a significant contribution to the Tri County Area. He/she has provided inspiration
for others to become involved in efforts to assist the community. The person has been an outstanding
volunteer in the community. He /she demonstrated an act of heroism and continue to serve people in the community. He/she may
have been involved in establishing goals for community development. The recipient is dedicated to the mission
of improving opportunities for all people in the emotional, physical and social environment in which they live.
The individual nominated should have met a minimum of one of the above requirements. Individuals
may be nominated by relatives, colleagues, fellow organization members, friends or those simply interested in
the work of the candidate. All nominations will be kept confidential at all times. No candidate will be
considered unless the nomination is received with an official form, filled out in full, with reasons stated.
It should be both the objective and subjective judgment of each year's judging panel whether or not a candidate
is deserving of this award, basing their choice on tangible evidence, discussion and final voting.
The deadline for Seafest
Grand Street Parade Marshal Nominations is on June 18th, 2010. To fill out a nomination form, visit www.seafest.ca or visit the Seafest Display for forms at the Visitor Information Centre. For more

YARMOUTH SEAFEST STILL GOING STRONG
Yarmouth Celebrates Another Year
of Life by the Sea
Yarmouth Seafest is a celebration by the sea, and has spanned four decades since the inaugural festival
in 1979. It was a spin off of the Western Nova Scotia Tuna Festival, and many of the events featured in the first celebration
are still a big part of Seafest traditions today such as the Seafest Pageant and Main Street Parade.
This year, Seafest will
be held from July 14th to 24th, and will include
traditional events as well as new additions to the festival such as the first ever Seafest BoatBox Derby! Events include the
Parade of Lights, Cooks Chowder Cook-off, Children’s Parade, Grand Banks Mackerel Toss and Lobster Eating Challenge.
Also keep an eye out for the Main Street Parade, Rum Running Races, the Seafest Queen Pageant, Lighthouse Day and many more
traditional activities.
